Voices and Votes: Democracy in America

Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit | July 4 – August 16, 2026 | Love Community Center, Rushville, IN

Rushville is Making History

This summer, the Smithsonian is coming to Rush County. Be part of the story.

A Smithsonian Exhibit in Your Backyard

Voices and Votes: Democracy in America is a nationally touring Smithsonian exhibit exploring the history of American democracy—who gets to vote, how we participate, and the power of civic action. And for six weeks, it will be hosted right here in Rushville, Indiana at the Love Community Center.

Why This Matters

Only a handful of communities nationwide are selected to host this exhibit, and Rush County is one of them. This is more than a display—it's a conversation, a reflection, and a celebration of what it means to be part of our democracy. Local voices will be featured through a powerful companion exhibit, including a co-exhibit dedicated to Wendell Willkie—Rush County’s own presidential candidate and global advocate for unity, civil rights, and bipartisanship.

What to Expect

  • Public forums on voting rights, rural civic life, and youth leadership

  • Film nights, art installations, and history walks

  • Special events for families, veterans, students, and educators

  • A community-wide Wish Wall collecting hopes for America’s future

  • Rush County Time Capsule to be sealed until 2076

  • Flat Willkie’s World Tour: Follow our traveling mascot across iconic American landmarks as he promotes civic pride, Rush County heritage, and the upcoming exhibit. Snap a photo with Flat Willkie and tag #FlatWillkie!
